What is an Executive Coach?

To understand what an executive coach is and what they do, it’s best to first understand what coaching itself is. Coaching is better known as a partnership with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching can be completely different from being a counselor, mentor, or consultant, with the only similarity being that it is a process driven solely by the client.

Is an Executive Coach any different?

When it comes to coaching it’s important to note that coaching is a tailored process in talent development as it involves a close and confidential relationship between the coach and the person being coached.

Coaches can help leaders understand their current skills and talents, illustrate how they are seen by their teams and peers, zero in on understanding and clearing current goals and setting up measurable action steps to completing set goals. Executive coaching also provides a safe, transparent and trustworthy environment to offer support. Executive coaches will usually meet one-on-one with senior managers, directors, VPs, presidents or any  C-level executive.

What Coaching Is Not

Coaching should not be confused with a counselor, mentor or consultant as coaching does not offer therapeutic outcomes. While counseling does offer a hefty amount of introspection, unlike therapy – coaching is future-oriented.

While coaching is a true partnership – a conversation focused on helping others move forward with goals, and hopes –  mentoring most typically consists of a more experienced person directly guiding; the mentor has already been through that experience and share advice on how to navigate.

For coaching to be considered successful, it has to be tied with what the client wants to accomplish, usually directed by the individual looking to be coached.

Because coaches are dealing with such personal and sensitive information, they should abide by ethical guidelines that include honesty, fairness, lawfulness, compassion, respect, loyalty, and dependability.
